Artist:
Gil Haller
Curator:
Linda Zisquit
the very height of physical effort, e.g. a swimmer diving into the pool, or a shotputter a second before hurling the ball, capturing the beauty of the body’s exertion. There is a found moment of beauty and delight in the body in the painting of the young woman disrobing and in the one leaning over near her, seeking something. The body movements, small gestures containing entire universes, are visible in the paintings of the artist’s mother on her bicycle, or in the painting of her doll a moment before the next step. Haller paints existing figures and landscapes in which he executes an alienating action: he paints life while simultaneously freezing its existence.—Dana Gillerman
