Amir Balaban: Naturally Tainted

19.10.13 - spring 2014

Artist: Amir Balaban
Curator: Ronit Sorek, The Department of Prints & Drawings, The Israel Museum, Jerusalem

Amir Balaban is a watercolorist who paints birds, plants, and landscapes.  His watercolors

capture and preserve transitory moments and perpetuate movement, tone and light.  His paintings are done in nature, out in the open, within the event, without context – like small pieces of a gigantic puzzle, which he does not seek, nor finds possible to solve.  The artist is a witness who does not intervene, nor interpret.  He invites us be a party to the prolonged and attentive observation through which he transforms lines into color spots.

The Jerusalem Bird Observatory was established in 1994 by a group of nature lovers who adopted a birdwatching site, one of the last that remained in the city. Gail Rubin, born in New York in 18.4.1938, studied photography and was an outstanding nature photographer. In the late 1960s she immigrated to Israel, where she was an active photographer and gained international recognition for her achievements. In 11.3.1978 she was murdered by terrorists while she was photographing seabirds in Ma'agan Michael's fish ponds.
