Shirley Faktor’s new exhibition reflects the last thirteen years of her work. Consistently oversized and seductively portrayed, her paintings direct fierce attention to that from which most people may avert their eyes.
The power of her paintings is attained by the contrast between the enlarged scale of her subject matter and the manner in which she “microscopically” probes it.
Faktor focuses on a number of subjects representing the cycle of life. These are articulated either directly or metaphorically, while alluding to the history of European art. Paintings of enlarged withering roses, hands, women’s bodies, and self-portraits which are intimately connected to the materials that wrap, envelop, and engulf them. Images of aging and new life underscore the experience of impermanence, as the intensity of time unravels, albeit with frozen moments.
Faktor’s paintings demonstrate insight into her fate as a human being and as a woman. (The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue, with essays by Dr. Gideon Ofrat and Prof. Ariel Hirschfeld.)
