In one of the most iconic scenes of early Hollywood films, Garbo, as Queen Christina (1933), walks around the room where she first experienced true love. She strokes the walls and furniture and explains to her lover: “I have been memorizing this room. In the future, in my memory, I shall live a great deal in this room.” Learning or acquiring memory, as this exhibition suggests, are not only cognitive actions but also physical actions. The body remembers, it is a living archive – and its expressions of remembrance are also physical and sensory. “In the Future I Shall Live a Great Deal in This Room” explores the performative gestures of the remembering body; the body that stores a dormant memory of feelings and emotions, and the body that seeks to awaken and bring them closer to consciousness and mind.
