The works included in the exhibition “Still/Life,” which I selected over the course of the past five years, form a sort of botanical collection centered on images of cultivated plants. These images, which charged with a range of related concerns, all explore different aspects of mankind’s dominion over nature. The oxymoron “still life” imbues the featured artworks with additional resonances stemming from the artistic manipulation of plant imagery. The transformation of natural vegetation into an image, or signifier, strips it of its inherent organic qualities, transforming it into a frozen, lifeless object. The artistic action to which the signifier is subjected thus further underscores the tension and contrasts embedded in the exhibition title.
