“Turning Inward”, Three New Exhibitions at Musrara Galleries

Head Curator: Avi Sabag

Director of Musrara Galleries: Ayelet Hashahar

The current exhibition program at Musrara galleries delves into our modes of observation – at ourselves and our immediate world, and at others and their lives – in the time of Covid-19, through photography, video, and sound. It examines how works of art articulate feelings of distress, anxiety, and crisis, while creating visual poetics.

In the annual exhibition in memory of artist Morel Derfler (1956–2001), the participating artists correspond with works from his photographic series “Urban Vegetation,” created almost four decades ago – responding to his attempt to create “forced nature” from rootless branches he photographed on the roof of his house. They observe the outside from their domestic interiors, examining the power relations and reciprocities between man and the surrounding nature in various ways. At times, nature infiltrates and invades the work; at others, it is the work of art that spawns it.

Morel Derfler Gallery

The Morel Derfler Gallery was established in 1993 as a photography gallery within the premises of the Naggar School in Musrara. The gallery showcases works by renowned Israeli and international photographers, as well as emerging photographers (some of whom are Musrara graduates). The gallery serves as an educational platform that provides the students with the opportunity to discuss the exhibitions and exposes them to different genres and working methods in all media.
