Four Cubits
Art Cube Artists' Studios
Artists: Yael Serlin
Curator: מיטל Meital Manor
In her solo exhibition ‘Four Cubits,’ artist Yael Serlin presents an intimate and exposed artistic process, dealing with the deep grief her family experienced after the death of her son, Yosef Haim Tzvi Serlin, during his military service. Serlin transforms the gallery space at the Art Cube Artists’ Studios into an inner realm charged with longing and pain, where familiar household objects are combined with archival documentation of Judaica from Jewish communities that were destroyed. The multi-layered installation is made from collage works and moves between delicate animations and large-scale video projections, which brings memory back to life.
Serlin places the voices of mothers, often absent from historical and biblical narratives, at the center of her work. She navigates sensitively between the grief over her son and the collective mourning of Israeli society, while raising challenging theological questions about the ethos of heroism and loss.
