The Moment of Truth
The moment of truth is a decisive point or significant event that requires the individual to make a decision and put it and its consequences to the test. These days, it seems that the “classic” definitions of a moment of truth or a fateful decision can dissolve in the blink of an eye. The world is inundated by accounts that turn out to be Fake News, alternative facts, and fake pictures processed as images of reality, an unpredictable and confounding pandemic, urgent reports of a climate apocalypse waiting just around the corner, and allegations of panic and misinterpretation of scientific data. Such moments, moments of doubt as to the possibility of knowing the truth, are in themselves moments of truth that challenge the individual with decisions that could prove fateful.
The moment of truth can be expressed actively or passively; it can summon an opportunity for confession, or alternatively, for asserting a false story. It can be private and personal, collective, communal, national, and even global. It can expose an existing truth or establish a new truth, while any action and direction chosen may have a dramatic effect on the future. Consequently, artists, philosophers, and people everywhere have to act, think, and devise plans while experiencing utter mistrust of the perception of reality and its mediators on the one hand, and doubts and insecurity as to the future of human existence on the other hand.
The Jerusalem Art Conference, held for the 5th time this year, is a joint venture of the Jerusalem art institution Manofim and Erev Rav and Harama magazines. The conference wishes to bring together the current prevailing discourse in art academies and higher education institutions and artists, curators, artistic directors, and art and culture professionals in Israel and worldwide.

Saron Paz | Experiential Technology and Technological Experimentation – Challenges and Opportunities in Delay?

Ayelet Zohar (PhD) | Fukushima Disaster: Representations of Crisis and Opportunity in Photography and Performance in Japan 2011–2021
Ayelet Zohar will discuss several projects carried out in Fukushima after the March 2011 “triple disaster” (earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear reactor meltdown) and artists’ responses to the colossal crisis, ranging from personal documentation, collaborations with the local residents, and participation in rehabilitation and construction efforts.
Ayelet Zohar (PhD) is a transdisciplinary artist working with painting, video art, and installation and a scholar of East Asian visual culture. Her research focuses on photography and contemporary art in Japan.

Benjamin Freidenberg | Real and Fiction Between Cultural Agents in Jerusalem
Cinematic culture and tradition in Israeli and Palestinian film and the relationship between filmmakers who mediate between the two parts of the city.
Benjamin Freidenberg is a film director and scholar, lecturer in the Department of Screen Based Arts at Bezalel, and chair of the Jerusalem Filmmakers’ Association.
Roee Rosen | Lucy is Sick, work in progress
In the artist book Lucy is Sick, Rosen’s propensity for fantasy and fiction is crossed with a direct confrontation of cancer. An incomplete version of the work was printed for the Steirischer-Herbst art festival in Graz, 2020.
Roee Rosen is an artist, filmmaker, author, and professor at Hamidrasha Art Faculty, Beit Berl College.
Danielle Alhassid | Must See
A performance that takes on the gallery walk as an artistic action, focusing on the intersection of formal narrative and unspoken history in Holland’s royal museum. The work discusses the “truth” of the museum and the tour’s moment of truth, in which it is undermined. The performance takes place via the museum’s app, which allows access to the artworks in days of social distancing, and at the same time, gives the tour guide complete control over the spectator’s gaze.
Tel Aviv born Danielle Alhassid is an artist and a tour guide, among others at the Rijksmuseum. Her works explore the connections between art and museuality. She graduated from Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Amsterdam.

Mor Cohen | The Mother of All Crises: The Institutional Art World’s Response to the Climate Crisis
How are art institutions and organizations reforming around the climate crisis in terms of representation, structure, and accountability?
Mor Cohen is an art scholar who holds a PhD from the Manchester Metropolitan University. She explores the relationship between politics and art: how politics is practiced through art, and how political struggles can impact the creation of new aesthetic landscapes.
Christoph Weber and Nikolaus Eckhard (Austria) | Schade, dass Beton nicht brennt (Pity Concrete Doesn’t Burn)
Today’s production of concrete – humans’ second most extensively used material after water – will most certainly lead to significant environmental challenges for generations to come. It seems almost cynical that, while concrete is scholarly discussed as the defining material of the Anthropocene, the industry praises it as “sustainable” due to its long-life cycle.
Christoph Weber and Nikolaus Eckhard will give some insights about their artistic practices with, about and against concrete and their efforts to develop interdisciplinary, collaborative research methods that connect critical art practice, environmental science, as well as posthumanist- and new materialist philosophy.
Both working as conceptual sculptors in Vienna, Christoph Weber’s artistic approach of ‘dissection’ meets Nikolaus Eckhard’s practice of ‘entanglement’ – they’ve teamed up to collaboratively challenge the material concrete with the means of artistic research projects.
Vaiva Grainyte (Lithuania) | Hypocrisy of a Jellyfish
Can I call myself an activist, if I made the work on climate change?
Is passiveness more profound (and effective?) than a loud virtue signalling the era of the apocalypse? V. Grainytė will present her personal approach towards ecology, consumption, poetry and dairy products.
Vaiva Grainytė is a writer, playwright, and poet.
She is the librettist and one of the authors of the opera-performance Sun and Sea (Marina), which represented Lithuania at La Biennale di Venezia and was awarded the Golden Lion for Best National Participation (2019).
